Welcome
The Friends of Moorfields is a registered charity, raising funds for the benefit of the patients of Moorfields Eye Hospital, a world centre of excellence for the specialist treatment of diseases of the eye.
Members come from all walks of life - patients, their relatives and friends, former patients and other well-wishers. Founded in 1963, our primary aim is to provide supplementary services and equipment for the comfort and well-being of patients and their visitors. We contribute towards buying much needed technical items for professional use in the hospital's clinics, outreach centres, operating theatres and research laboratories. We also promote and manage a wide range of volunteer work, supporting the work of the hospital and adding to the service provided. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * “THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WORDS” 2.30 pm on WEDNESDAY MARCH 24TH 2010 in the Dining Room Extension at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Her photograph can be seen in the "Personnel" section of our Image Gallery. Very sadly we have to report the death of two long-serving and much-loved Trustees. Both BARBARA LEE and PAULINE CLASPER died in September 2009 and they will be sorely missed. Their contribution to the work of the Friends for so many years was greatly appreciated. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Over seventy members attended our AGM in November 2009 - with more than 200 apologies! Four new Trustees were appointed - MICHELE BEACONSFIELD, GUS GAZZARD, MARTIN GRIFFITH and STEPHEN WILLIAMS. We warmly welcome our new colleagues and look forward to working with them for many years to come. See "About Us" for full details of Trustees and officers and view 2008/09 Accounts here Long Service Awards were presented to a number of volunteers. The meeting heard from John Pelly and Rudy Markham, respectively Chief Executive and Chairman of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and received a presentation from consultant Mark Wilkins concerning his work on the “implantable miniature telescope” for eyes with advanced age related macular degeneration. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPECIAL RAFFLE - WIN A HOLIDAY IN FRANCE The draw will be made on February 26 for the special Week's Holiday in a French Gîte and we invite supporters to buy and/or sell tickets, helping to raise a great deal of money in support of the Children's Centre work. Friends' Collecting Days are held at London stations and stores with our team of volunteer collectors giving two or three hours of their time to help. See Events and Activities for collecting opportunities in the next few months. We are anxious to build on recent collecting successes and need to recruit new members for the team. Some volunteers give a couple of hours a month, many a great deal more, others perhaps only on one or two occasions a year. We will gratefully accept whatever you feel able to offer! If it would help to chat with some of the present team, or to find out more about this invaluable voluntary task, why not consider coming along to our special COLLECTING TEAM GET-TOGETHER at the hospital at 2.00 pm on MONDAY 8TH MARCH. No obligation - coffee and biscuits provided! Please contact us if you might be interested. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * How Can I Get Involved?
