Welcome
The Friends of Moorfields is a registered charity, raising funds for the benefit of the patients of the Moorfields Eye Hospital, a world centre of excellence for the specialist treatment of diseases of the eye.
Members come from all walks of life - patients, their relatives and friends, former patients and other well-wishers. Founded in 1963, our primary aim is to provide supplementary services and equipment for the comfort and well-being of patients and their visitors. We contribute towards buying much needed technical items for professional use in the hospital's clinics, outreach centres, operating theatres and research laboratories. We also promote and manage a wide range of volunteer work, supporting the work of the hospital and adding to the service provided. EMMA VEREY and MICHAEL PARKER have been Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively since November 2007. Their photographs can be seen in the "Personnel" section of our Image Gallery. See "About Us" for full details of Trustees and officers. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 2007/08 - "A SUCCESSFUL YEAR" At the Friends of Moorfields Annual General Meeting in November 2008 the Hon Treasurer, Kevin Custis, was pleased to report a very successful year. Increased fundraising and donations, coupled with legacies and bequests, have enabled the organisation to achieve more than ever for the hospital. He expressed sincere thanks to all members and financial supporters, to active volunteers and to the office staff. More than 320 guests enjoyed a splendid evening at the Hotel Intercontinental in Park Lane on Saturday 22nd November. Visit the "Shanghai Ball" section of the Image Gallery for some pictures. Ball Committee Chairman, Martin Griffith, and his team are considering whether a 2009 Ball is viable in the current financial climate. We would hope that even a scaled-down version would be possible - watch this space! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPECIAL APPEALS! Friends' Collecting Days are held at London stations and stores with our team of volunteer collectors giving two or three hours of their time to help. During the period from July to December the team will be taking their collecting boxes to Liverpool Street, Canary Wharf and several other underground stations as well as to the Sainsbury's store in Camden Town, to Bedford Station and to the Lloyd's of London offices in EC3. They will also guarantee a presence throughtout "Friends' Fortnight in November/December when all visitors to City Road will be asked for a contribution. Please contact us if you might be interested in joining the team. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ROOMS WITH A DIFFERENCE AT THE RONALD McDONALD HOUSE! Thanks to some splendid work by Marion Cantrell and her team of textile embroiderers, each of the ten bedrooms at the Ronald McDonald House Moorfields - the Children's Centre 5th floor family accommodation unit - displays a superbly made 3D textile panel. The rooms themselves have been named to correspond with the theme of each design, so young patients and their siblings are able to spend a night or two in The Polar Bears Room or The Heart Room. The designs can be viewed in the "Support for the Hospital" section of our Image Gallery. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * How Can I Get Involved?
