POOL TOURNAMENT MAKES BIG FUNDRAISING SPLASH!
Regular and enthusiastic fundraiser Basil Bramble has done it again, amassing more than £400.00 for the Friends of Moorfields from a special in-house pool tournament at Morgan Stanley in Canary Wharf. More details will follow shortly ... meanwhile, pictures from the event can be seen in the "Events" section of the Image Gallery DAY OF CELEBRATION With several reasons to celebrate recent activities, the Friends organised a special afternoon for invited guests. First, the production team who put together the new "Friendly Food" cookbook spoke of the way in which more than sixty recipes had been contributed by members and supporters, Gloria Hunniford had provided celebrity support - including a foreword and a recipe - and financial support obtained from Barclays Bank and Moorfields Private. Thanks and congratulations were expressed to David Jewell, Krishani Ranaweera, Carol Cobb and Michael McClean, supported in the office by Liz Fisher and Tony Willoughby. The party moved on to view the extensive ground and lower ground floor changes in the main hospital and heard from Friends' Chairman Emma Verey how donations and subscriptions had enabled the Trustees to make a substantial contribution to the costs. The Friends' Shop had also benefited from the refurbishment works with the addition of new shelving and display units. In the Children's Centre, the group was introduced by matron Mally Scrutton to artist Lucy Casson who had created brand new animal sculptures on one of the ground floor pillars and, in the first floor ward, a memorial to Sister Ero, who served the hospital for 32 years. The sculpture was officially revealed by Martin Hallett who had been a patient of Sister Ero. Finally, Anne Roberts from Ronald McDonald House Charities welcomed the re-opening after pipe renovation work of the Ronald McDonald House - a family accommodation facility on the top floor of the Centre. The House, a joint project between RMHC and the Friends of Moorfields, provides overnight bedrooms for families of young patients. Oliver Gunning, now six years old, was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma three years ago and is being treated under a “shared care” scheme by Professor Peng Khaw from Moorfields and the local team at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. This is the second event arranged by the Gunning family and we are grateful for their generous support. On this occasion good weather enabled many of the adults were able to enjoy their coffee and cakes outside. Over sixty children and their parents turned out to support the event and to see a show from “Mr Hullabaloo.” Click Image Gallery and visit the Events section for pictures from this event. Each time Oliver and his family attend a Moorfields appointment, they are accommodated in the Ronald McDonald House on the fifth floor of the Children’s Centre. The House is a project jointly run by Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Friends of Moorfields and we are delighted that this wonderful facility makes the visit less distressing for the Gunnings and for many, many other families. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CONCERT AT CHELSEA OLD CHURCH A wonderful evening of music and friendship took place in the truly inspriring surroundings of Chelsea Old Church. "Musical Medics for Moorfields" celebrated a variety of classical singing pieces ranging from baroque to opera and including many favourites. Sopranos Frances Laycock and Jane Wilkinson, accompanied by pianist Richard Salter, instrumentalists Fleur Hughes and Simon Ben-Nathan and introducer Simon Woods were enthusiastically received by a large audience, who shared refreshments in the Petyt Hall afterwards. This marvellous event raised more than £6,000 in support of the work at Moorfields Eye Hospital. A photograph of the performers can be seen in the "Events" section of the Image Gallery. Thoughts and plans are already in process for another concert in the autumn of 2011. The Friends' office is compiling a list of those who would like to receive the details. Please contact us. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DONATIONS OF JEWELLERY AND ARTWORK APPRECIATED In excess of £4,000 has been raised during the past twelve months as a direct result of the sales of artwork and jewellery donated by well-wishers. Sales take place on an occasional basis and contributions are welcome at any time - artwork of any size and in any medium, jewellery of all types, styles and values. Every penny raised in this way boosts the Friends' funds. Some items currently available for sale can be viewed in our Image Gallery and future sale dates can be seen in "Events and Activities." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * STILL MORE SUPPORT FROM CYNTHIA'S BRIDGE DAYS Avid bridge player Cynthia Kelly from Silk Willoughby in Lincolnshire has now organised three special Bridge Days at The Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. Each event has proved hugely successful, not only providing more than 130 bridge players for a pleasant meal and a full day of bridge, but also raising a great deal of money in support of Moorfields Eye Hospital. Almost £2,000 has been raised in this way. Another Bridge Day is planned for May 2011 and details are available from the Friends' office. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TWO WONDERFUL TWELFTH BIRTHDAYS Absolutely no connection ... apart from the fact that these two admirable young people (a) had a 12th birthday earlier this year, (b) organised a party and (c) invited guests to donate money for Moorfields instead of bringing gifts. Alex Chu and Amie Hampsheir-Gill are to be congratulated and warmly thanked. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * For our calendar of activities see Events and Activities.
